Lacquer Peel: Causes and the Proper Fix

Flaking, milky patches where the shine has lifted off? That's lacquer peel β€” and it's very common on older cars. Here's the story.

What's actually happening

The clear lacquer coat that sits over your colour has failed and started to lift, usually after years of UV exposure. Once it goes, the colour underneath is exposed and deteriorates fast.

Why you can't just paint over it

Lacquer peel can't be polished or patched away β€” the failing clear coat has to be taken back to a sound surface and refinished, or it'll keep spreading.

The fix

We strip the affected area back, prepare it properly and refinish it, blended to match. On badly affected cars, a full respray is often the tidiest long-term answer. Bring yours down and we'll assess how far it's gone.
