Solid, Metallic & Pearlescent Paint Explained

Not all car paint is the same, and the type yours uses affects how a repair or respray is done β€” and what it costs. Here's a plain-English guide.

Colour-change respray β€” in basecoat

Solid

The simplest type β€” a single, flat colour with no sparkle. Easiest to match and repair, which usually makes it the most affordable to work with. Common on whites, reds and blacks.

Metallic

Fine metal flakes give the paint a subtle sparkle and depth that shifts with the light. Matching and blending takes more skill, because the flake has to lie the same way as the original.

Pearlescent

Pearl finishes add ceramic crystals that make colour appear to shift with the angle. Stunning, but the most demanding to match β€” it's a job for an experienced sprayer.
