Claim on Insurance, or Pay Yourself?

After a knock it isn't always obvious whether to claim or just pay for the repair. A few quick sums usually make it clear.

Compare the repair to your excess

If the repair costs little more than your excess, claiming rarely makes sense. The bigger the gap, the more a claim starts to add up.

Factor in no-claims

A claim can cost you your no-claims discount and raise premiums for years unless protected. Weigh the one-off repair against that longer-term cost.

Who was at fault?

If someone else was at fault, the repair may go through their insurer without touching your record. Establish this early.

Speed and hassle

Paying directly is often quicker and simpler — you choose your repairer and get on with it. For smaller jobs many people find it worth it.

Get the figure you need

Bring the car to our Grimsby workshop and we'll give you an accurate repair cost, so you can decide with real numbers. If you do claim, we handle insurance work. (General guidance only — check your policy.)
